About the Authors

Lesley Beake has written about the past since she was at school. It was the Romans then, but now she writes about deep time, the most fascinating history of all, where scientists have to work out what happened by careful searching and thinking hard about what they find. Lesley has over a hundred published books with her name on them and has edited many more for other writers.

Dr Emily Hallinan is an archaeologist and researcher, currently based at the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and Evolution of Human Behaviour, University of Algarve, Portugal. She has collaborated with Lesley and Children’s Book Network for more than ten years, since beginning her first archaeological research project in South Africa. The landscapes, stones and people of the Tankwa Karoo captured her heart during her PhD fieldwork in the region.

Dr Michael Pattison began his career researching the history of science, and has published works on both the history of science and British politics. Throughout his career he taught in further and higher education in the UK. Since retiring he has followed his passion to illustrate, working mainly for charities and the University Hospitals Birmingham. Since joining this project he has become obsessed with the San mantis trickster, Kaggen.
